In honor of ArtMill's Artist-in-Residence this year, Jill Giegerich, who teaches at the University of California at Riverside, we propose a group of works based loosely on the theme of Empire. The "Inland Empire" name for the Riverside area of California, was due to the richness of the area in the late 19th century due to the citrus, dairy wine-making boom. Empires, while now a political structure hopefully of the past, still bring images to mind of power, glory and control over another. As a metaphor for the way human kind has functioned throughout written history, it is not a far jump to the workings of the individual self.
